Early Summer Soil Moisture Contribution to Western European Summer Warming

نویسندگان

چکیده

Warm European summer temperatures are often preceded by low soil moisture conditions, but also depend on the atmospheric circulations and associated rainfall that may trigger drought to persist land-atmosphere feedbacks take place. The quantitative role of early (ESSM) trends, versus trends in other large-scale drivers (LS), explaining long-term warming have not been investigated so far. Using regional climate simulations with forced circulation different possible initial moisture, we show increasing ESSM deficit explains almost all trend (1980–2011) Western Europe (?0.1–0.2°C.decade?1, p-value < 0.05). It contributed a similar amount Eastern Europe, although here LS much larger part overall warming. Our results emphasize crucial pre-summer water cycle current future evolutions climate.

Summer soil moisture regulated by precipitation frequency in China

Drought is one of the most important but least understood issues in global environmental changes. Decrease in soil moisture is an indicator of drought. Here, we analyze summer (June–August) soil moisture measurement data across 50 sites in China in order to investigate the linkage between climate change and drought. At the country scale, a significant decrease in summer soil moisture in the top...

Early Summer Response of the East Asian Summer Monsoon to Atmospheric CO2 Forcing and Subsequent Sea Surface Warming

The early summer regional climate change of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is investigated in the phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) archive. In the greenhouse gas–forced scenario, reduction of radiative cooling and increase in continental surface temperature occur much more rapidly than changes in sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Without changes in SSTs, the ear...

Soil respiration under climate change: prolonged summer drought offsets soil warming effects

Climate change may considerably impact the carbon (C) dynamics and C stocks of forest soils. To assess the combined effects of warming and reduced precipitation on soil CO2 efflux, we conducted a two-way factorial manipulation experiment (4 °C soil warming + throughfall exclusion) in a temperate spruce forest from 2008 until 2010. Soil was warmed by heating cables throughout the growing seasons...

Fourfold higher tundra volatile emissions due to arctic summer warming

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which are mainly emitted by vegetation, may create either positive or negative climate forcing feedbacks. In the Subarctic, BVOC emissions are highly responsive to temperature, but the effects of climatic warming on BVOC emissions have not been assessed in more extreme arctic ecosystems. The Arctic undergoes rapid climate change, with air temperature...

Contribution of land-atmosphere coupling to recent European summer heat waves

[1] Most of the recent European summer heat waves have been preceded by a pronounced spring precipitation deficit. The lack of precipitation and the associated depletion of soil moisture result in reduced latent cooling and thereby amplify the summer temperature extremes. In order to quantify the contribution of land-atmosphere interactions, we conduct regional climate simulations with and with...
